"Prophet's Candle" (Candle of Hope) - lit on the 1st Sunday of Advent symbolizes the prophets who foretold the coming of the Messiah. "Bethlehem Candle" (Candle of Peace) - lit on the 2nd Sunday of Advent in memory of the place where the Savior was born. "Shepherds' Candle", also called the Candle of Joy, is lit on the 3rd Sunday of Advent and reminds of the shepherds who first saw Jesus and announced the "joyful news" to the world. This Sunday is called Gaudete ("Rejoice"), hence the candle is joyful pink in color. The last candle is lit on the 4th Sunday of Advent and is called the "Angel's Candle" or Candle of Love. It symbolizes the angels who appeared to the shepherds in the Bethlehem grotto, announcing the birth of Baby Jesus.
