Before you grab the rake, assess the area for your future lawn
The area should be relatively flat. Any slopes will complicate both initial work and later maintenance. Next, pay attention to soil compactness. Lawns thrive best on permeable soils, so it’s worth preparing such a base at the start.
Did you know...
without proper watering, your lawn won’t stand a chance to look like a green oasis in summer. If you plan automatic irrigation, find out where the system will be installed. If watering manually, consider convenient water access to avoid dragging hoses across the garden. It’s also important to check soil pH. The optimal pH range is between 5.5 – 6.5. If the pH is outside this range, you still have time to adjust it with appropriate fertilizers and stabilize it at the right level.
Now the hard physical work
2 to 3 weeks before sowing, loosen the soil by digging, breaking up clods, and leveling the surface. Remove roots, stones, and weeds. It’s best to eliminate weeds chemically using commonly available products (check how long after application you can sow seeds). At the end of this stage, compact the soil. For small areas, you can simply tread it down. For larger areas, a roller is recommended to both compact and level the surface. After this, take a few days off. The soil will settle, and you’ll have time to choose the right seed mix.
Sowing, the details!
It’s best to sow the selected seeds from early April to mid-October when soil temperature is at least 10°C. Before sowing, apply fertilizer to help young grass grow healthy from germination. Mix the fertilizer into the soil. This not only distributes the fertilizer evenly but also loosens the soil, preparing it for sowing. Sow seeds by hand or with seeders. The optimal method is the so-called “cross sowing,” sowing seeds lengthwise and widthwise. The sowing rate is about 25 - 30g per m². After sowing on loosened soil, use a rake to mix the grass seeds with soil so they are covered by about 1 cm of soil. This prevents drying out and scattering. Finally, roll the entire surface and water it.
Watering
After sowing, water the soil regularly for the first 3 weeks. Seeds need constant moisture and watering. The best time to water the lawn is early morning. Once your lawn looks decent, you can gradually reduce watering. It’s even recommended to reduce watering several times during the growing season to encourage root system development.
And feeding?
Fertilizing your lawn is not complicated. From early spring to mid-May, when the lawn needs many nutrients to quickly recover after winter. Fertilize preferably after mowing. Make sure the grass blades are dry during this procedure.
Finally, mowing – let the fun begin!
Use the mower for the first time when the lawn reaches about 10 cm. When mowing, leave about 7 cm blade height. For the next mowings, leave about 4-5 cm. Generally, each mowing should cut no more than 1/3 of the blade height, assuming you mow once a week. Mowing height depends on lawn usage intensity and ranges from 3-6 cm.
