- Thyme is a perennial groundcover plant. It blooms from June to August, producing rounded flower heads with colors depending on the variety. Thymes are shrubs widely used in gardens. They are excellent for rock gardens and filling empty spaces between plants. Thymes are easy to grow. They prefer sunny locations but tolerate drought well and have minimal nutrient requirements. They thrive in sandy, well-drained, dry soils poor in nutrients, so they do not require fertilizing or watering.
Thymes are hardy or semi-hardy plants that tolerate low temperatures well. Some may suffer frost damage in harsh winters but regenerate well in spring.
