SOS is a unique grass seed mix characterized by rapid germination and growth, even when overseeding occurs at very low temperatures. During cool periods, SOS grasses germinate and grow much faster than perennial ryegrass alone. It is now possible to restore adequate turf coverage on sports fields damaged by intensive use in significantly less time. Thanks to the SOS mix, the turf recovery period after overseeding can be shortened by up to 50% (if overseeding is done very early in early spring when soil temperature is around 4ºC). SOS provides dense turf during periods when the lawn has suffered most from winter.

The fastest germination thanks to the new multiflora ryegrass variety: SOS! The SOS mix has gained a reputation as an overseeding product guaranteeing excellent germination and growth of young plants at very low soil temperatures (down to 4 ºC).

SOS is a solution that shortens the recovery time of sports fields after overseeding. Overseeding with the SOS mix guarantees at least 60% turf coverage within one month, which is 18 days faster than standard mixes containing perennial ryegrass! Forget about multiflora ryegrass that resembles forage grasses. Thanks to advanced breeding techniques, Barenbrug has achieved the desired traits of the third generation SOS grasses, such as fine blades, visible below.

How to properly establish a lawn?

➡️ Choose the right location for the lawn

Select a flat area, avoiding slopes and uneven terrain. Check soil permeability, which is crucial for healthy grass growth.

➡️ Check irrigation options:

Determine the location of irrigation installation if you plan automatic watering. Ensure easy access to water if you prefer traditional watering.

➡️ Soil loosening:

Loosen the soil, remove roots, stones, and weeds. Then apply chemical weed control if necessary. After chemical treatment, allow appropriate waiting time before sowing seeds. Compact the soil using a roller or by tamping to achieve an even surface.

➡️ Sowing:

Choose a suitable period from March to October when soil temperature is at least 10°C. Sow seeds evenly using the "cross" sowing method. Cover seeds by mixing them with soil to a depth of about 1 cm and roll the surface.

➡️ Watering:

Water the area regularly for the first 3 weeks after sowing, especially in the morning. Gradually reduce watering as the lawn develops, which promotes a better root system. Roots will grow deeper searching for water.

➡️ Lawn fertilization:

Select appropriate fertilizer depending on the season and apply every 8-12 weeks. Apply fertilizer after mowing, ensuring the grass is dry.

➡️ Mowing:

Start mowing when grass reaches about 10 cm height, leaving about 7 cm blade length. For subsequent mowings, cut the grass by no more than 1/3 of its height, depending on lawn usage intensity. Adjust mowing height as needed, maintaining grass between 3 and 6 cm.

❗️❗️ATTENTION❗️❗️

Please note that in summer months (from late May to early August) grass seeds do not grow at the same rate as those sown in spring or autumn. These grasses often require extra care because weeds may appear on such lawns, including species not previously present in the area, e.g., lamb's quarters and crabgrass. These weeds can exploit good underground water conditions, growing faster than grass. Soil is never completely free of weeds, and some weed seeds can survive in the soil for up to 30 years. During soil preparation for sowing, weed seeds may be brought to the surface, causing weeds to appear that were never before present in the area.

We recommend establishing lawns in summer only if they have well-designed irrigation systems or if rainy weather and moderate temperatures occur. It is also advisable to keep a sample of seeds (about a handful) from each sown batch and the bag or label, which may be helpful in case of complaints.
