- The garden hydrangea originates from Japan, from where it was introduced to Europe in 1790. Most of its flowers are sterile and do not produce seeds, but they form exceptionally impressive, colorful, spherical flower clusters. It is one of the most resilient plants – after drying out, watering easily restores its vigor. The garden hydrangea is the only hydrangea species sold as a potted plant. It cannot live long indoors but can be a beautiful gift given in spring, which when planted outdoors in summer, decorates the garden for many years. However, if you do not have a garden and decide to keep the hydrangea in a pot, remember that the plant must overwinter in a cold place to bloom the following year. Potted hydrangea flowers come in various colors depending on the variety: pink, light blue, blue, white, greenish, even yellow. Hydrangeas should be purchased when buds begin to open, revealing the flower color. Choose plants with a nice shape, healthy green leaves, and no broken branches. In pots, hydrangeas grow up to 60 cm in height and similar width, while in the garden they reach about 1 m in height and width.
