Oregano is a perennial groundcover plant. It blooms from June to August, producing clustered flower heads with colors depending on the variety. Oregano shrubs have wide applications in the garden. They are ideal for rock gardens and filling empty spaces between plants. Oregano is easy to grow. Although it prefers sunny locations, it tolerates drought well and has minimal nutrient requirements. It favors sandy, well-drained, dry soils poor in nutrients, so fertilizing or watering is not necessary.

Oregano plants are hardy or semi-hardy perennials that tolerate low temperatures well. Some may suffer frost damage in harsh winters but regenerate well in spring.
